Although the model numbers are not sequential, the TS-530S is actually an upgrade to the TS-820S. It incorporated additional features and performance improvements while retaining the hybrid combination of solid state technology and power vacuum tube technology to take advantage of the best of both. In addition to the 160, 80, 40, 20, 15, and 10 meter bands, it covers the 30, 17, and 12 meter bands allocated in the mid 1980s by the World Administrative Radio Conference (WARC). WWV can be received at 10 MHz on the 30 meter band for frequency and time synchronization, and provision is made for installing an auxiliary band. Rated RF power output is 100 Watts CW and 130 Watts peak envelope SSB power. The TS-530S has a more reliable digital frequency display with 100 Hz resolution. Using a very stable VFO and phase locked loop (PLL) heterodyne oscillator, its single conversion architecture reduces in-band spurious responses (birdies) and provides exceptional image rejection. It is a bit smaller and lighter than its TS-520(S) and TS-820(S) predecessors and is very similar to the TS-830S, sharing much of the same circuitry. It features receive incremental tuning (RIT), transmit incremental tuning (XIT), and IF Shift which in combination are useful during DX pileups, when your contact is slightly off frequency, or when there is nearby interference. It also has an effective impulse noise blanker. The Kenwood hybrids are noted for their outstanding audio quality, and this upgrade includes improved compression processing to increase SSB average power without loss of intelligibility. Normally powered from 120 Volt or 240 Volt power mains, an optional 13.8 Volt DC power module can be installed.
